I think he did a great job. Not having watched the show, I am judging based only on the movie as a self-contained project. I think he exellently portrayed the struggle to control emotions. What didn't impress me was what an over-confident prick Kirk was. I'm not saying the actor did a poor job, i'm just saying I don't think Kirk is very likable. At least, I didn't like him much. He was cocky and insolent. Scottie was awesome, and the guy who played Sulu struck me as spot-on, but then again, I never watched the show.
