June 26, 2008: 500 Well I started writing my present day thriller again. We shall see where this goes. I stupidly posted it on the blog here on the Macbeth page as proof that I indeed wrote something. Be soft though it is very rough and terribly written.

June 25, 2008: 0. Don’t judge me.

June 24, 2008: Just got a great idea in my head and had to write it down. Obviously I need to write alot more but hey at least it stops the quotidian floggings!

May 28-June 9: Where did all that precious posting time go? I don’t know why but I have been lazy in posting my adventures in writing. I shall resume as of today and hopefully will be better at it.

May 27, 2008: 112 Nothing fun, gripping, esoteric, banal, pounding, page turning, or melodramatic. Just 112 plain words, in all their naked glory.

May 26, 2008: 0 It was a lazy Memorial day and I didn’t do anything productive. I don’t even think I dressed myself. Bleh.

May 25, 2008: 700ish I wrote the next installment of my silly On Writing adventure. I didn’t edit it before I posted, and for that I apologize. It came out quick and fast and I posted it with the same haste. Mostly to get the flogging to stop. I am sorry if you are disappointed with it; I am too. I wish my writing had a little more dimension and flare. But as Stephen King says, “You can’t make a good writer great.” /sniffle.

May 21-24, 2008: 0 I am a bad panda I know. Oh well…

May 20, 2008: 256 well I am going back to my roots and getting some good ideas. Where are those roots you ask? Can’t tell or else you will go there too! But had some fun changing up the world a bit for the better in my humble opinion.

May 19, 2008: Frank strikes back with roughly 1,032 words. I hope you guys like it. It is a work in progress and I had to cut it off short because it was getting too long. So hopefully part 4 will be forthcoming much more rapidly.

May 15-18, 2008: Unknown # I have written some days and not others. I have received no floggings and this makes me sad. But I am more sad that I am not producing more writing. I think the Union is supposed to help with this but it is getting so large that some people are falling through the cracks and not getting publicly ashamed for their laziness. I don’t know if that would help me right now or not but i am really open to anything.

May 14, 2008: 0 I may need an intervention. Falling off the wagon. :(

May 13, 2008: 125 Worked on On Writing part three. I know I should stop while I am ahead but I am just that silly.

May 12, 2008: 0 /shrug

May 11, 2008: 500ish I should be more accurate. But I have been sick and not in the mood to post things. Why am I so lazy?!?!?!

May 10, 2008: 209 finished up my On Writing second part. Which didn’t turn out to be that great, but hey I wrote something!

May 9, 2008: 115 Really just went through the motions on this one. I have been letting life get in the way. But Ade got to meet Stephanie Meyer, who is one of her big inspirations for writing so that is very good.

May 8, 2008: 0 Flog me!

May 7, 2008: 333 I work more on my short story. Needs more work before I will share it. I do not want to embarass myself.

May 6, 2008: 1,000 Not a bad day. I used my vacation to get some good development in.  I am working on a short story right now that I hope could turn into something more.

May 5, 2008: 0 Flog me!

May 4, 2008: 1,094 Working on a little short story that came to my head. If it turns out good, I’ll post it for you all to make fun of me!

May 3, 2008: 869 Not a bad or good day.

May 2, 2008: 2,640 I took my kids for a walk and got this coolest idea for my story. I raced home and many words later here I am with a sweet new angle that makes my world a little more unique. I am happy with it and hope I can keep up the entusiasm.

April 29-May 1, 2008: 1000ish Ok so I really have been lazy in updating online things, but I have been posting at teh union HQ. With the exception of my Rudession two days ago I haven’t really been writing anything worth posting about. I have done my 100 but it was just going through the motions. But I have all this next week off and I plan to write a ton and get this story going like it should be. Also I hope to go where I have never gone before and get something good written. Who knows.

April 28,2008: 115 More villain development. Too tired to write much.

April 27, 2008: 441 I got my villain! I am so happy. I was talking to my mother-in-law and she gave me an idea that just made everything click and then bam there he was in all his evil glory-shivers-I can’t wait to throw him at my protaganist and see what happens.

April 26, 2008: 3,044 Story is still trucking. Got alot done on my first chapter. If only I could nail my villain down all would be well.

April 25, 2008: 1,044 Not a bad day. My story is really coming along. I have nailed down my plot and am starting to really get the voice of my main character down. This is really quite fun.

April 24, 2008: 133 Real life got in my way. And this weekend will be bad too. But This story will get out! whether I want to do it or not.

April 23, 2008: 2,613 I worked on my magic system and alot of the origins of man and other things in my world. It was alot of fun and I hope I can stay on this high for a month or two and finish something good.

April 22, 2008: 3,545 EDIT: Ok so I got bored this evening and cranked out a ton of stuff on my story. It was actually pretty good. I hope tomorrow is as productive.

April 21, 2008: 192 Not a bad day. Also drew up a map for my main country.

April 20, 2008: 181 well I tried to work on my description in general, but really fell flat on my face. I need to keep practicing and not give up. But I really really want to (give up that is). It is so much easier to just read other great people than to try to become one myself. :(

April 19 2008: 100 Created a minor character. I hope tomorrow is most productive.

April 18 2008: 102 Just doing my duty

April 16-17 2008: 800ish I have been really sick and not been really in the mood to sit at a computer, thus the lack of keeping up with my log. I am trying the character creation stuff from Liz’s site and it is fun. I think my main character is really coming around. Now I just need to finish up his competition. Evil people are really fun and easy for me, especially since I have such a good example in Jake. :)

April 15 2008: 123 Easily my worst day ever. I just went through the motions and didn’t get anything worth keeping down. Hopefully tomorrow will be better.

April 11-14, 2008: I was too lazy to get on and post and so I can’t remember how many but it was nothing spectacular. I also blame that stupid Scott Lynch book. I literally could not put it down.

April 10, 2008: 354 My main character is coming along very nicely. I figured out why everyone hates him.

April 9, 2008: 257

April 8, 2008: 0

April 7, 2008:100

April 6, 2008: 200. Getting my world put together.

April 5, 2008: 114. Bad day don’t ask.

April 4, 2008: 1,770. Made some good progress on many new ideas and things with my story.

April 3, 2008: 206! What a slacker. I shall write a plethora of palavras tomorrow. But today was development and creation–on a very small scale.

April 2, 2008: 214 words! Mostly background on the world. I am making real progress and excited about my first literary romp. More tomorrow!

237 words! Bam! My first day under the watchful eye of the word count Nazi-er union boss (actually I don’t even think Ing knows I am doing this). I must say procrastination is my forte. I started writing at 11:55 pm and wrote for approximately 7 minutes. It turned out to be a rather fun dialogue about death by one of my main characters. I was quite surprised actually. I hope tomorrow’s work will be even better.

    The Union is always watching.

  2. 2 quarto March 26, 2008 at 4:12 am

I read it. That would have taken me 70 minutes. /sigh

  3. 3 Egidius White March 27, 2008 at 3:13 pm

    Show me your words!

  4. 4 Ing March 27, 2008 at 7:26 pm

Looks like we got another one. Heh.

Well, now that Whiteacre has linked you, Ing knows you’re counting words. Consider yourself caught in the Union net.

I’m not sure how I became the union boss/word nazi, actually. I guess it might be because this whole thing started on my blog…and I’m the one who started calling this a union…and because I started bugging Egidius (Whiteacre) about paying his dues…and mostly because it pleases him to cast me in the role of organizational despot. Which is a role I’m perfectly willing to fill, as long as it takes no extra effort on my part. :)

ANYWAY… If you really have joined the union, I owe you a flogging. Where’s the word count for March 25 and 26?

And also, if you want to let the union really get its hooks into you, you should send a message to Liz, of Real Joined-Up Writing, to get yourself linked on the central home page she’s setting up for the group at http://www.wordcountbuddies.byethost33.com/.

And also…welcome! I hope the blogging/word-counting thing works for you, and that your inchoate writing career becomes more…choate (unchoate?).

    Now about those union dues…

    Get to work!

    /flog

  6. 6 urhamlet April 2, 2008 at 1:21 pm

LOL. My back hurts. My posting problems are due more to my inept blogging skills. I know this is not rocket science, but I keep goofing it up. My wife is going to show me how to do Liz’s thing so I will get up to date shortly.

  7. 7 Daeruin April 7, 2008 at 4:39 am

Wow, nice word count on the 4th. What about the 5th? Is a flogging in order?

  8. 8 Flogidius White April 9, 2008 at 7:28 pm

In reference to the lack of word countage on April 7 and 8, see my name.

  9. 9 Daeruin April 10, 2008 at 12:55 am

    Consider thyself floggéd.

  10. 10 Flog Ing April 11, 2008 at 8:23 am

More flogaciousness. Floggage, Flogicide. Flogaliciousness. Floggery!

Where’s yer word counts? You better get going again or I’ll have to do something really malicious…like linking Fragmentary Blue on my blog.

  11. 11 Daeruin April 18, 2008 at 3:27 am

I know you’ve been posting your word counts on the Word Count Buddies site. Do you intend to continue posting updates here? ‘Cuz I wanna know whether to take this page off my list of favorites or not. :)

  12. 12 urhamlet April 18, 2008 at 8:16 pm

I know my site is boring and not worth favorite status. I will be keeping up with it. I have just been sick and doing as little as possible at the computer. And I have the second Scott lynch book to finish! Dang you and your good picks!

  13. 13 Egidius White April 22, 2008 at 5:23 am

April 16-17 Post reported for libel.

  14. 14 Daeruin May 11, 2008 at 11:59 pm

I flog you not only for missing a few days, but for not posting anything about them sooner. Flog!

  15. 15 Ing May 19, 2008 at 7:25 pm

    FLOG!

I haven’t been keeping up with the Union as much as I should. It’s all I can do to slog out 130 words or so and enter my word count. Sometimes not even that much; I didn’t post any word counts this weekend, even though I did write a little. But enough mea culpa.

Keep writing! Looks to me like you’ve got some good stuff going. It’d be a shame if you stopped.

I’ll come back and flog every day until you start entering your word counts again (or move your blog to escape the harassment…it might be easier just to write). :)

  16. 16 Daeruin May 19, 2008 at 11:44 pm

I was also very disappointed when nobody flogged me for my missed words. There was a feeling of emptiness, and it was kind of a blow to my self esteem that nobody seemed to notice. So I sincerely apologize for not berating you.

Oh, and hey–you are FLOGGED! BAM! Get to work!

  17. 17 Egidius White May 20, 2008 at 9:34 pm

I flog by omission. That guilt-inducing silence is me rebuking you with a look.

  18. 18 ingrose May 20, 2008 at 10:18 pm

Of course I got back onto the flogging train on the day you DID write. 1000+ words, no less. Takes me a week to write that much.

  19. 19 Liz May 24, 2008 at 9:13 pm

    Words fail, apparently. FLOG!

  20. 20 ingrose May 24, 2008 at 11:26 pm

(To be sung to the tune of the Indiana Jones theme song)

Flogalicious, flogaloo… Ing is flogging, flogging you, you you
Flog a little, flog some more…
Flog a little, a little, and then flog some more (flog some more, flog some more)

Flog a little, flog a lot. Flog a little, flog a lot, lot more
Flog the writer who doesn’t write
Spare the flogging, the flogging, and spoil the writer (the write…)

I can do this all day…I can do this all day, day, day
I can do this all day…

Okay. I can’t do this all day. But I can do it tomorrow. From the looks of things I should have been doing this for several days already, but I happened to fall off the wagon myself this week.

But I’m back, and the whip hand is rested.

So actually, please DON’T write. I can’t wait to come back and do this again. It’s very invigorating.

    Heh.

  21. 21 ingrose May 24, 2008 at 11:30 pm

ps – I didn’t mean to smile. The computer thought my parenthesis carried some kind of soft human emotion. No such thing. This is a serious FLOG. (On your blog, blog, blog…another flogging, another blogging…oy. Indy on the mind.)

  22. 22 Daeruin May 25, 2008 at 1:35 am

Yeah, dude. You’re, like, totally flogged.

  23. 23 urhamlet May 25, 2008 at 9:06 pm

I flog my self. I have a great story, I have lots of scenes to write. I have just been overcome with “Iamnotgoodenoughitis.” Hopefully all of this flagelation will snap me out of it.

  24. 24 Daeruin May 27, 2008 at 1:06 am

Snap out of it! Snap! Bad panda! That disease you have is caused by your wily and subversive Internal Editor. Find him and beat him into submission. Get some brass knuckles and crush him into a bloody pulp. Then, once you’ve finished your first draft, you can let him out of his dark little hole and start feeding him something other than bread crusts and water.

  25. 25 Ing May 28, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I see you on the WCB Wall again…not that I have much room to talk, cause I’m probably going to show up there for today…but…

    FLOG

    Okay. That’s overwith.

I have Iamnotgoodenoughitis too. It kept me from doing any of my own writing for a good two years. That and plain old procrastination. I still have it (probably for good reason…I think I really do suck as a novel-writer) but I followed the example of Egidius and beat my internal editor into submission with a sand-filled hose. Now I keep the shifty little bastard chained to the credenza in my office; that way I can let him free when I need to do some ruthless editing at work, but he can’t interfere when it’s time to write my own stuff at home.

  26. 26 Daeruin June 2, 2008 at 9:59 am

It’s a pity I have to flog you again.

  27. 27 urhamlet June 2, 2008 at 10:10 am

Indeed! I am a terrible person. Without a cure.

  28. 28 Ing June 2, 2008 at 11:04 pm

Eureka! I’ve found it! The cure…is…writing. That and flogging.

    FLOG!

Doesn’t it feel wonderful? Now get back to writing before Egidius uses his sand-filled hose to beat you.

  29. 29 Egidius White June 3, 2008 at 10:35 am

    Fills hose with grit sand.

  30. 30 Daeruin June 5, 2008 at 12:16 am

Picks up hose and raises it high.

  31. 31 Daeruin June 9, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Swings the hose with all his might.

  32. 32 Ing June 10, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Now don’t make me flog you again.

  33. 33 Daeruin June 14, 2008 at 12:46 am

What more can I say except . . . FLOG!

  34. 34 Ing June 14, 2008 at 2:43 pm

    Again… FLOG.

  35. 35 Ing June 14, 2008 at 2:44 pm

We should just start calling this your Word Count FLOG.
    Heh.

  36. 36 Daeruin June 24, 2008 at 1:00 am

So…are you taking a break from the writing, or what?

  37. 37 Ben June 30, 2008 at 12:36 am

Don’t let the evil Gatatonic suck you away from writing and draw you into the devilry of WoW! Flog!

  38. 38 Ben July 21, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Alright, as much as I hate sports metaphors, it’s time to step up to the plate and get some writing done–or post a Weak Excuse so we’re spared from seeing your name eternally up on the Wall of Shame!

The Poem

Why make so much of fragmentary blue In here and there a bird, or butterfly, Or flower, or wearing-stone, or open eye, When heaven presents in sheets the solid hue? Since earth is earth, perhaps, not heaven (as yet)— Though some savants make earth include the sky; And blue so far above us comes so high, It only gives our wish for blue a whet. –Robert Frost
